What to Wear

General Photo Sessions

I am often asked about what to wear to a photo session. I do have some pointers, but overall the most important thing is that you are comfortable. If you feel uncomfortable, you will look uncomfortable. Do a practice run in your outfit. Do you feel good? Yes? Then, don’t worry, you will look good!First, I generally don’t recommend wearing shirts with logos or writing on them. These can become dated in the years ahead and you don’t want to hate a photograph just because of some writing on your shirt.

Second, I usually recommend not matching too much, such as everyone wearing a white shirt and kakhi pants. Instead, I recommend picking a few main colors. For a family of four, this could look something like this: Dad wears a white collared shirt underneath a blue sweater and black pants. Mom wears a white sweater with black pants, blue shoes and a blue scarf. Big sister can wear a blue dress with a black shoes and a white cardigan. Little brother can wear blue pants and a black sweater.

Third, you want to make sure the photos coordinate with your house. If your whole house is decorated in reds and yellows, then the above color combination probably will not be ideal. Take a look around your house and plan out where you plan to put your photographs and gather some inspiration from that room.

Lifestyle Sessions

A lifestyle session is a little different in terms of clothing choice. For a newborn lifestyle session, I usually recommend parents and older siblings to wear either solid white or black. Jeans or black yoga pants are great for the bottom half. You might get a little warm before a session, as we want your house nice and toasty for your new babe. Therefore, feel free to wear a pair of shorts before the session starts and change into your pants right before we get started.

Your new little one won’t be wearing too much clothing during a session as I prefer to have them only wearing a diaper. Before the session starts, try to keep your baby in something that is easy to take on and off, such as a one piece sleeper. Try to stay away from clothing that has to be pulled over the head and clothing that could leave lines on your babe’s body. We want to keep your little one as happy and as sleepy as possible, so the less tugging and pulling on that little body the better!
